Rediscovering Connections, Cultures, and Adventure through Workaway

Welcome to "We Shall Discover" - a travel blog where we share our adventures and experiences as we explore the world and its diverse cultures. The excitement of discovering new places and meeting new people is what drives us to continue exploring. Through our personal experiences, insights, and travel tips, we aim to inspire and encourage others to embrace adventure and broaden their horizons. Join us on our journey of discovery, as we continue to seek out new and exciting opportunities to connect with people and cultures from all around the world.

Our First Impressions

55 hours, 10 days, coast to coast! The Edible Forest Farm in Eastern Ontario invited us for our second Workaway adventure to help in their organic permaculture farm.

Our hosts gave us the impression of friendly yet assertive behavior. Instead of having a warm welcome, we were informed of the rules of our stay. Despite their expertise and knowledge, we found it difficult to connect with them on a deeper level.

Upon our arrival, we were happy to see a beautiful log home surrounded by 76 acres of greenery and gardens. As we settled into our room, we noticed the limited privacy we were provided with. Unfinished, thin walls, noisy floorboards, and squeaky doors made it challenging to make the most out of our stay.

We were amazed by the diverse variety of jobs that were available to us. For instance, one day could include jobs like chopping comfrey plants, planting strawberries, and laying down landscape fabric while the next day could bring: wood mill jobs to construct planks, chainsawing, and even preparing shiitake mushroom logs. Aside from the diversity, the new environment made it frustrating to get the job done due to exposure to new allergies, flies, and ticks.

In conclusion, we looked forward to the new learning opportunities and the self-improvement we hoped to achieve.

What we learned

At Edible Forest Farm, we practiced our previous Workaway skills like chainsawing, wood splitting and raking. We also had the chance to try new things such as preparing shiitake mushroom logs, milling fallen trees, composting, and planting willow plants.

In the grand scheme of things, we were grateful for the opportunity to work at Edible Forest Farm and contribute to its growth and maintenance. The experience had its ups and downs, but it taught us a significant amount about ourselves and the value of communication with others.

Final Thoughts

In our final reflections, our time at Edible Forest Farm was a mix of challenges and growth. While we faced limitations in terms of privacy and accommodations, the diverse range of tasks provided us with invaluable opportunities to learn and expand our skills. We came to understand the importance of effective communication and adapting to new environments.

Overall, we are grateful for the chance to contribute to the growth and maintenance of the farm. As we continue our journey of discovery, the lessons learned and memories made at Edible Forest Farm will always hold a special place in our hearts.
